Acupuncture has been used for 2000 years. Acupuncture comes from China and the Chinese believe all life forms have energy or Chi flowing through them. When we are healthy and well we have balance in our body and the chi flows with no restriction. If we are unwell there is an imbalance in the flow of Chi. So acupuncture is about getting balance back to the body. Western doctors tend to have a different viewpoint on this form of medicine. They believe that by placing an acupuncture needle under the skin we are halting the pain message from going to the brain. If the message is not received at the brain we do not feel any pain. Apart from helping reduce pain, people have reported many other positive effects with Acupuncture.

Physiotherapy
Paula Hemsley
Physiotherapy means treatment of the body by physical means. Treatments involve all the structures in the body: bone, muscle, nerve and joints. While all these are treated, this is often by different means: stretching in the case of muscles or nerves; mobilising, for joints or nerves; exercise to build up strength, in the case of muscles and, best of all, massage for those tired aching muscles. Paula Hemsley, physiotherapist at the Centre, also uses Acupuncture when necessary. Sometimes a condition needs a gentle approach so as not to aggravate the symptoms whilst at other times a more assertive technique will be required to aid resolution. Exercises and activities to do at home are often given to aid the recovery process. Advice is always given on ways to help recovery and also how to prevent making the condition worse. Paula’s ethos is only to treat as many times as is necessary and only when it is needed.
